Discover the best way to attack your autumnal allergies before they attack you.
While we all enjoy the cooler weather, the smell of pumpkins and apples, and the beautiful changing leaves that fall has to offer, it isn’t always as pleasant for allergy sufferers. If you are dealing with seasonal allergies and are desperately seeking relief, find out what you and your Manhattan, NY ENT doctor Dr. Richard Nass can do to help.
For Ragweed Sufferers
If you are allergic to ragweed, then you’re probably not too happy to hear that ragweed pollen is released in late summer and fall. Follow your local weather to see how bad the pollen count is in your area. If pollen is high, try to avoid going outside, particularly in the morning and on dry, warm days.
While we know that staying indoors throughout the fall just isn’t practical, there are also some things you can do to make sure that your home doesn’t fall under attack. For one, keep windows closed. If it’s a warmer day run the air conditioner rather than opening the windows. Central air that uses a HEPA filter is always the best way to prevent pollen from getting into your home.
If you have a pet, make sure to bathe them regularly and designate only certain areas of the house for them (e.g. don’t let them in your bedroom).
Avoid Issues with Mold
Mold can be found in any dark, moist areas like rotting logs or piles of leaves. If you have any dead plants around the house be sure to remove them immediately. While working outside during the fall months (unfortunately those leaves can’t rake themselves) be sure to wear a mask at all times. Once your chores are finished remove those clothes immediately and throw them in the wash.
If you have mold in your home (they love basements and bathrooms!) be sure to clean it immediately. You can easily do this by adding one ounce of bleach to one quart of water. If you find mold in your carpeting you’ll need to replace it.
Cleaning is Key
The best way to avoid serious allergy issues that will have you running to your Manhattan ear, nose and throat doctor is by keeping your home as clean as possible. Invest in a quality vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter and be sure to vacuum furniture and drapes, as well as the floor. Just as you would with outdoor work, you’ll want to wear a mask while cleaning each week to avoid flare-ups.
